John Wilkin
Biography
John Wilkin develops and applies computational model-based systems for interdisciplinary ocean research (nutrient and carbon cycling; larval dispersal; ocean forecasting) in coastal and adjacent boundary current waters. Most recently, these projects emphasize using variational methods for assimilation of in situ and remotely sensed observations, sensitivity and predictability analysis, and the design of observing networks.
Dr. Wilkin is a member of NASA’s Ocean Surface Topography Science Team and is active in the Coastal Altimetry community promoting uses of high-resolution altimeter sea level data in the coastal ocean. He co-authored NOAA’s National Strategy for Coastal Ocean Modeling in response to the 2013 U.S. Presidential National Ocean Policy and has been an advisor on data science best practice to NASA’s Physical Oceanography Data Center, the UN Global Ocean Observing System panel on ocean physics observations, and the U.S. NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative.
